RFID badges

RFID, or radio frequency identification, uses radio waves to read a chip embedded in the badge without contact or line of sight. Passive RFID badges have no battery and draw their power from the reader's field, which keeps them affordable and makes them the most common choice for events. Active RFID badges carry a battery and can be read from much farther away, but they cost more and are usually reserved for asset tracking rather than attendee badges.

Most event RFID runs on the UHF band, which can read a badge from several feet away and read many badges at once. That makes RFID the right call when you want hands-free access gates, automatic session attendance tracking, or a heat map of how attendees move through a large expo hall. QR code badges

A QR code is a two-dimensional matrix that any smartphone camera can read in a second. It holds far more data than a traditional barcode, and printing one costs nothing beyond the ink already going on the badge. That combination makes QR the workhorse of modern events: attendees scan their own badge to check in, exhibitors scan attendee badges to capture leads, and staff scan badges at session doors to record attendance.
